The Mediterranean Marathon League is born from the union of the Marathons of Palma, Cyprus, Palermo, and Thessaloniki.
Four international marathons that share the shores of the Mediterranean Sea have signed today in Palma de Mallorca an agreement to join a brand new league and offer new challenges to runners from all over the world. The “Mediterranean Marathon League” was born from the commitment of the Palma Marathon Mallorca (Spain), the Logicom Cyprus Marathon in Paphos (Cyprus), the Intl Marathon Alexander The Great (Thessaloniki, Greece) and the Maratona di Palermo (Palermo, Italy).
The four directors have signed the founding agreement today in the Palma Town Hall, on the eve of the Palma Marathon Mallorca, which will be held this Sunday, although the league will not start until 2024.
These four events have in common their international character, they are great tourist and sports destinations that share a common location on the shores of the Mediterranean, and they are all members of the AIMS (International Association of Marathons), which guarantees their organisational quality standards. Although other novelties and agreements will be announced in the coming weeks, the male and female winners of each race will automatically win the race bib and accommodation to compete that same year or the following year in another of the races that make up the League, and there will also be draws so that one of the popular participants who finishes one of these marathons will also win the bib and accommodation in another of the subsequent races.
The league will kick off on 3 March with the Logicom Cyprus Marathon, held in the beautiful coastal town of Paphos, along the promenade over the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean, over 4 distances: Marathon, Half-Marathon, 10km Road Race & 5km Fun Run. The second event will be the Alexander the Great Marathon in Thessaloniki on 21 April in Greece’s second-largest city. It covers the route between Pella, the ancient capital of Macedonia, and Thessaloniki, with spectacular views and an impressive cultural tradition.
The third event will be in October 2024, with the Palma Marathon de Mallorca, which this coming Sunday will bring together 7,000 runners in its 9-kilometre, Half-Marathon and Marathon races. In 2024 it will celebrate its 20th anniversary, coinciding with the birth of the Mediterranean Marathon League. The first edition of the league will be closed in mid-November next year by the Palermo Marathon, which starts at the iconic Massimo Theatre and runs through the historic centre to the Palazzo dei Normanni. There will be two distances: a Marathon and a Half-Marathon.
